Community = Caring: An Interview with coLab Community Manager Carolina Nogueira

Supporting a community as big as coLab involves several people working together to create amazing experiences. Today, we’re talking to Carolina Nogueira, coLab’s Community Manager and one of the shiny, happy people responsible for creating the coLab experience you know and love.

When you walk into coLab, chances are, one of the first people you’ll run into is Community Manager Carolina Nogueira.

Originally from Brazil, Carolina came to Canada to study, to improve her English, and to have new experiences:

“I wanted to change my life, and I thought my English wasn’t good. I wanted to improve my English and learn something different. I wanted to experience a new culture and meet different people.”

Carolina says that she was surprised at how polite and quiet Canadians are. (That’s right, you heard it here first – the stereotype is true!)

“Brazilians are very loud. We don’t often say ‘please’ or ‘sorry’ because (in Brazilian culture/language) they’re implied.”

In her day-to-day, Carolina is often responsible for directing tours, organizing events, managing coLab’s internal projects, and putting out the occasional (metaphorical) fire.

When she isn’t herding all of the cats, you can usually find her dominating her opponents on the volleyball court.

(Editor’s note from coLab’s Content Czar Mike Straus: Seriously, if you step onto the court with Carolina, you’d better hope & pray that you’re playing volleyball with her and not against her. #askmehowiknow)

Carolina was also a volunteer member of the local team that organized the 2019 Walk In Her Shoes Kelowna charity event on behalf of CARE Canada. The event, which took place in early March while there were still several inches of snow on the ground, saw about 50 people walk 6.5 kilometers to raise funds and awareness for impoverished women in developing countries.

Carolina is currently in the process of launching a life coaching business. She says that helping others achieve their goals was one of her favourite parts of her work with IBM, and she’s eager to continue that work in a new, deeper capacity:

“I love personal development. I’m already a certified life coach in Brazil. I want to help people make their dreams come true.”

For Carolina, the best part of coLab is the people – being in a community full of talented and interesting people is its own reward.
